Emotionally Focused Externship w/ The Tampa Bay EFT Community

Externship in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy® (EFCT)

“Externship” (also known as “Externship in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy®,” “EFCT Externship,” “Externship in Emotionally Focused Therapy”) is a training in the EFT for Couples (EFCT) stream. There are also equivalent courses in EFT for Families (EFFT) and EFT for Individuals (EFIT) streams.

Overview

An Externship in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy® is an immersive four-day (24+ hour) training experience, foundational for therapists aiming to specialize in EFCT. Led by certified trainers, it offers a comprehensive introduction to the EFCT model, focusing on the science of attachment and the systematic approach to couple therapy. This training is crucial for therapists because it equips them with the necessary skills to foster secure, resilient relationships in therapy. It’s the first step in formal EFCT training, opening the door to advanced practice and certification and enhancing therapists’ efficacy and confidence in their clinical work with couples.

What will I learn in an “Externship”?

  • Participants will obtain a clear understanding of the basic experiential and systemic concepts of an “Emotionally Focused” approach to therapy.

  • Participants can view clients in the web of their interpersonal attachments and conceptualize relationship distress and repair based on theories of attachment and emotion.

  • EFT is a relational therapy. The Externship will focus on the EFCT model in the 2019 book Attachment Theory in Practice and teach the model as implemented in a couple of therapy sessions.

  • Participants will develop skills in sharing and maintaining an engaged, open, and collaborative alliance with clients.

  • Participants will develop skills in the 5 moves of the basic macro-intervention—the EFT Tango—to change patterns of affect regulation, models of self and others, strategies for engaging others, and interactional patterns.

  • Participants will develop skills in EFT micro-interventions taken from experiential and attachment systemic intervention models.

  • Participants will develop skills for overcoming common blocks and impasses in couple therapy, shaping core corrective emotional experiences that lead to constructive dependency and what Rogers termed ‘existential living.’

Emotionally Focused Therapy: Strengthening Bonds in Couples, Individuals, and Families

to Aug 8

Emotionally Focused Therapy: Strengthening Bonds in Couples, Individuals, and Families

Join EFT Trainer James “Doc Hawk” Hawkins to explore Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a humanistic, versatile, and empirically validated approach to psychotherapy rooted in the science of attachment and emotions. In this experiential workshop, Doc Hawk will offer a comprehensive introduction to EFT across three primary applications:

  • Individual Therapy (EFIT)

  • Couples Therapy (EFCT)

  • Family Therapy (EFFT)

Throughout the course, practitioners will explore the role of attachment in treating individuals, couples, and families by examining EFT’s core elements, learning to deepen clients' emotional awareness, and mastering the "EFT Tango" to guide therapeutic healing.

Doc Hawk will demonstrate how EFIT, EFCT, and EFFT can help clients identify and transform negative and restrictive processing patterns through a blend of didactic presentation, clinical video, live demonstration, discussion, and practical application. Participants will learn to support clients' emotional expression across different relational contexts, attentive to the unique dynamics of each therapeutic setting.

This workshop serves as a comprehensive introduction to EFT, a foundation for advanced training, and a place to deepen existing knowledge of EFT. Designed for therapists of all experience levels, it provides practical skills to enhance emotional safety and therapeutic connection while offering an opportunity to learn collectively with colleagues.

Self of the Therapist: EFT Focused w/ the STL EFT Community

Course Overview:
This workshop aims to create space for EFT and other attachment-based experiential therapists to fine-tune themselves as therapeutic instruments in their clinical work. We will use the EFT treatment map and in-session process (Tango) as the framework for the training. During this workshop, we will guide therapists through exercises and role plays to help them notice their own affective experiences and develop plans to utilize and use themselves in an attuned way in the therapeutic process.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be more aware of their affective responses in various clinical situations (anger, client challenge, feeling lost/confused, encountering blocks).

  2. Participants will develop plans to regain focus when they get dysregulated or lose attunement in the session.

  3. Participants will practice noticing and making sense of triggers and emotions occurring in them.

  4. Participants will be able to identify therapeutic choice points to increase the effectiveness of their experiential work.

Who should attend?
This advanced workshop is appropriate for all licensed and pre-licensed mental health professionals including psychologists, professional counselors, clinical social workers and marriage and family therapists who work with individuals who have attended an EFT Externship.
***Payment is due at the time of registration.
